TokenTrace is a small tool with a simple purpose: to help people see the carbon footprint of their AI use, so they can make informed choices about it.
AI is incredibly useful. It's also energy-intensive, and most people have no visibility into the environmental cost of their conversations. We think that should change — not through guilt, but through awareness. If you can see the impact, you can start to manage it.
TokenTrace provides a free browser extension and web calculator that estimate the carbon emissions of AI queries on platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Our estimates are based on publicly available research into the energy consumption of large language models, the carbon intensity of the electricity grids where data centres operate, and the token counts of your queries. We try to be as accurate as we can with the data available, and we're transparent about our methodology.
We are privacy-first by design. The extension never reads your prompts or AI responses — it only measures the metadata needed to estimate carbon. Everything is stored locally on your device unless you choose otherwise. You can read more in our Privacy Policy.

TokenTrace grew out of a straightforward question: if we're all going to use AI more and more, shouldn't we at least be able to see what it costs the planet?
We'd love to hear from you — whether it's feedback, a bug report, a question or suggestion about our methodology, or just to say hello.
